Anzac biscuits with chocolate buttons

You can’t beat the chocolate twist on this classic Kiwi biscuit recipe from Taupo’s Vanya Insull of VJ Cooks.

Makes 16 biscuits.

Prep time: 20 minutes, cook time: 20 minutes, additional time: 30 minutes.


  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup coconut
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 125g butter
  • 2 Tbsp golden syrup
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 Tbsp boiling water
  • 1 cup dark chocolate buttons


  1. Mix together oats, coconut, brown sugar and flour in a large bowl. 
  2. In a jug melt together butter and golden syrup in microwave for 30 seconds. 
  3. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add to butter then stir.
  4. Add butter mix to dry ingredients and stir to combine. Pour in chocolate buttons and stir together.
  5. Chill mixture for 30 mins then roll into balls and place on a lined baking tray. 
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes at 160ºC until golden. 
  7. Cool then serve. 


These biscuits can also be made without chocolate buttons.You can swap for white or milk chocolate chips or buttons.
