Solid success: making the move to solids

Starting solids can be beyond daunting. Figuring out how to get your child to eat, second-guessing what’s safe and what isn’t, and then the continuous Google-scrolling for recipes can be endless. But baby feeding expert Tarryn Gordon is here to share her top five tips for starting solids successfully.

Tarryn, a qualified early childhood and primary teacher, is also the founder of baby feeding brand Squishies. She says parents can be torn between mixed messages about the ‘right’ way to start solids and become overwhelmed. Then there are the complications such as coping with allergies.

“At the end of the day, all of these questions and doubts come from one simple factor; you want what’s best for your little one. Don’t we all?” she says.

Here are her top tips to help empower parents to embrace the solids journey head on:

Tip 1: There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to introduce solids

Some people prefer a more baby-led weaning approach (finger foods) whilst others lean towards a more puree approach. Both approaches have their benefits and the best choice comes down to what you feel most comfortable with. So trial a mixture of the two and see what works best for you and bub.

Tip 2: Ditch the expectations

Initially, your baby will explore touching, squeezing, mashing and tasting the different textures. Some days, they will consume the food, while others will look more like a sensory play experience. Getting messy and exploring are all part of the process, so start to embrace them now.

Tip 3: Create a calm and relaxed environment

Enjoy bonding with your child over mealtimes and sharing in the experience. Eating with your child can help them learn by watching you, and creating that calm space allows them to feel safe and secure with their new experiences.

Tip 4: Let the freezer become your best friend!

You don’t have to cook up fresh meals every time. Simply freeze your leftover purees in an ice-cube tray, (one with a lid) and heat and serve when you need it next. Super handy!

Tip 5: Trust the process

It can take up to 10 times for a baby to start liking certain foods. Keep offering them, stay consistent, and don’t stress. Your baby will get there.

“Remember, starting solids is a learning experience for both of you. Trust yourself and enjoy the moment. Before long, you’ll be wishing for these special moments back!” Tarryn says.
