Book Review: The Welcome Cookies, by Kaye Baillie and Kirrili Lonergan

Review by Alexandra. 7 years old.

This book is fun, it’s cool and it’s nice and kind.

The story is about a girl named Mabel who goes to the Sugar Plum Café every Friday.  Mabel loves the Sugar Plum Café.

Then Mabel goes on a holiday. Mabel misses the Sugar Plum Café, so she paints a surprise picture for Miss Plum.  If you don’t know who Miss Plum is, she’s the owner of the Sugar Plum Café.

Then Mabel goes back to Sugar Plum Café, but it’s not there! There was a new café. One Friday, Mabel and her mother took the bus and went to the new café.

When Mabel went to the front counter, she suddenly stopped. Her painting was on the wall. Then Mabel asked the new owner called Lionel if she could make Welcome Cookies to make new people feel welcome. Then she went back every Friday to make Welcome Cookies with Lionel.

Review from the adults

This is a sweet book about dealing with change and welcoming new people. We really loved the recipe for making your own Welcome Cookies that is tucked away in the back of the book.
