During these July school holidays, Ferrymead Heritage Park celebrates the playful side of our history with two exhibitions that are sure to elicit excitement and possibly nostalgia.
Along with the Edwardian Township and tram rides that Ferrymead is famous for, this term break visitors are invited to solve the Great Hay’s Mystery and check out a colourful showcase of Kiwiana.
Edwardian children
The Edwardian Township at Ferrymead transports visitors back in time. Children are invited to dress up in Edwardian garb and embrace the experiences (and chores) of their colonial ancestors. Lighting the coal range and drying clothes with the mangle has never been so much fun!

Kiwiana showcase
Ferrymead is excited to showcase Kiwiana in all its glory during these July school holidays. Think pavlovas, Christmas at the beach, Footrot Flats, buzzy bees, jandals – all the aspects (and yummy kai) that we Kiwis claim as our own.
The Great Hay’s Trail
Anyone remember the iconic Hay’s rooftop playground? With trick mirrors, slides, a miniature train and merry-go-round, it was wondrous. If you grew up in Christchurch in the 1980s or earlier, indulge the nostalgia as you introduce your kids to the magic of the Hay’s rooftop – now at Ferrymead! For those too young to remember, ask your parents about their memories, and invite them on the Great Hay’s Trail too.
Whether it’s donning an Edwardian bonnet, baking biscuits, riding the tram, checking out the fire engines or sliding down the Hay’s stegosaurus, little moments in our history come alive for kids and adults at Ferrymead Heritage Park.
